Your sightseeing on the way may include rice paddies, coir weaving, fishing, local women weaving fringed coconut leaves into roof thatching and creating good thermal insulation for local houses, chance to observe the skill of making brooms using the veins of coconut leaves, etc.

Day 02- Kumarakam | Alleppey:
After breakfast, go for a guided village walk with an auto rickshaw and enjoy an authentic ´village experience´ in the natural setting of the village of Kumarakom. You may visit several local families and see the cottage craft and traditional livelihood earning methods. An example may be Mariamma´s house where the entire family is engaged into screw pine craft or Thazapaya; one of the oldest cottage crafts in Kerala; weaving the amazing handicraft mats, purses, carry bags etc, and makes a great souvenir of Kumarakom Village.
Visit then a plantain orchard. In Kerala, plantains are available in different colours, sizes and tastes. At this orchard, one gets to see this prime ingredient of Kerala kitchen in its natural bloom. Apart from that, there are numerous curries, desserts, fritters and snacks that use Plantains in abundance.
Thereafter experience the toddy making process from the coconut tree. In this process, a toddy tapper climbs the coconut tree with a tapping kit to extract the sweet juice. This is a cumbersome procedure that requires acumen and expertise. These tappers are licensed people who are allowed to climb the long palm trees. Others are not allowed to climb the tree.
Scheduled next is a visit to the lakeside where the conventional fishing methods featuring nets, rods and lines can be observed.
For lunch, enjoy the Kerala traditional Sadya meal feast served on a thick plantain leaf. Refreshing tender coconut and bananas will be served after relaxation.
Post lunch, a visit to Paddy fields is scheduled. Kumarakom is famous as the rice bowl of south India. This walk showcases the bountiful bird life of the region and the fields here are a part of Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary.
Scheduled next is a visit to the nearby farmyard where the intricate procedures of converting coconut husk into coir fibre can be observed. Then visit Nalini´s house. Here also, one can witness the different stages involved in coir making.
By late afternoon, take a canoe, motor boat or houseboat and go for an enchanting backwater cruise on the canals and rivers of the backwaters. Enjoy the cruise through the narrow water ways while you can watch the fishermen picking up and catching the Chinese fishing nets. It is also the best chance to watch the normal life of Kumarakom from its very first hand. Relax and spend a serene unwinding evening in this oasis of silence!
After this enriching day, return to the home in Kumarakom for a languid evening and overnight in this backwater destination. (Overnight stay in Houseboat can be arranged on request).
